The Rare Victorian website (awesome) has an article up on the proper identification of some spiral legged furniture that is frequently claimed to be Hunzinger, but which is actually produced by the Merklen brothers. It is a great article with a handful of Hunzinger pictures. Definitly check it out.

What we have here is a Hunzinger platform rocker that appears to be in pristine condition. It is a great piece from which to observe some of the finer details of Hunzingerness that can be found on many of his pieces. One thing caught my eye though. There is some sort of brace in the arm of the chair which I have not seen in any of his other chairs. It appears to be a wooden brace with a metal rod inside the brace. Could it have been added later to provide additional support to an old and "rickety" chair?

Hunzinger Sofa?

What we have here is a sofa listed as "in the style of" Hunzinger. Now note how it has nearly identical decorations as the piece I listed yesterday as being a Hunzinger set. However, if you research enough antiquing blogs, you will find out that back in the day, one could just buy those ornamentation, so they might be used by any manufacturer. But, regardless of whom made the sofa, it is quite nice.

IDK, the more I look at it, the more Hunzeresque it does appear...

Hunzinger Parlor Set

Antiquarin Traders is selling an American Rosewood parlor set by George Hunzinger c. 1885. The set includes a sofa, two armchairs, and four side chairs. Needless to say, it is insane awesome, and if I had 15 grand laying around, they would be in our house.

Hunzinger Platform Rocker with "circles"?

Ok. I don't mean to flood this site with platform rockers, but here is another interesting one. It has a fairly common spindle design, but is accompanied by strange little posts with circular wooden ornamentation. In addition, it has a great shot of the paper patent mark that was included on many of the later chairs. As that paper is now well over 100 years old, you have to give a lot of credit to whomever was mixing the glue!

Hunzinger Table - Candle Stand

Here is another one of those tripod candle stands that is frequently listed as being a Hunzinger. This person claims that it is in Harwood's Hunzinger book. If any Hunzinger fans out there would let me know, I would be most appreciative. (I can't quite bring myself to spring $200 to buy the text as of yet.)

This pattented double writing arm chair by George Hunzinger looks to be a treasure. Right now it is listed for $2500 on eBay. The piece is pattened in 1899 and is found in the Harwood book on Hunzinger.

Pair of George Hunzinger New York faux bamboo Rosewood chairs. Signed and dated 1869.

Signed "Hunzinger NY Pat. March 30 1869". Faux bamboo open work frames with medallion backs. Museum coded.

”Overlook Mansion”, which was designed by famed architect Archimedes Russell. Built during America’s ”Gilded Age” between 1886 and 1890 for Inventor – Industrialist David Burrell.

Measurements:
19.5" x 31.5".

Condition:
Both in fine condition. Original finish. The seats and medallion centers are upholstered (upholstery later).

Provenance:
Overlook Mansion, 1 Overlook Dr., Little Falls, New York.

These museum quality pieces with provenance were listed on eBay for over $3000, but did not sell. Thanks for the link Christa!

This rocker with pattented steel webbing is listed at $700 on eBay now. Although the fabric is a bit worn, the chair looks to be in good condition. With a little cleaning and some new upholstery, it would make a fine addition to your living room.

The patent is from April 18, 1876 and is for the steel webbing for the seat and back of the rocker.

Very sweet Hunzinger platform rocker with patented spring system. It's good that the finish looks great on it, because it would be a nightmare to re-finish. Probably 60 hours to do it right. I'm not keen on the red upholstery, but that could be replaced without too much trouble.

I'm not a huge fan of the lollipops, but this rocker is pretty nice. Check out the twisted spindles in the front - from personal experience, each of those takes like 5 hours to remove paint from. Another observation - the horizontal reinforcement bar through the back spindles. I don't recall seeing one like this before.

Christa sent this folding chair my way. It went on eBay for a meer $110. Why so low? A strap was broken. What an Idiot. He should have spent the 15 minutes to fix the strap and then sell it for $250. Speaking of Idiots, I should have bought it, fixed the strap and mad a $140 on the deal... er minus shipping.... probably would have only made $1. Nevermind.

Hunzinger's platform rockers are my favorite design. The spring mechanism used creates a rocking motion different from other chairs. The design is quite comfortable and they just look really great in your house. This one on sale at eBay is fantastic. Note the great shot of the duplex spring and the patent sticker. The two rockers we have came with the sticker as opposed to an imprint stamp. I don't have information as to when the company started using stickers on the pieces.

Note the differences in construction - specifically the spring mechanism and the angle braces beneath the arms. Of course there are a ton of platform rockers on this site to which one can compare.

This one is in fairly good shape and on eBay right now. What is remarkable is how many pictures the seller posted - 12! I only put up five her to save space. Note the patent stamp and what appears to be very old upholstery covering the horse-hair padding. I found this same horse-hair padding on my chair... who knows... could have been the same horse!!! People frequently inquire as to what the original upholstery looks like for Hunzinger chairs... well, I really don't know. I suspect that the more beat-up the upholstery is, the more likely that it is original. In this case... it is pretty much ripped to shreds. Still a beautiful chair.

George Hunzinger: A Man Ahead of His Time

I found this auction item at ArtFact. Evidently the piece is from the early 29th Century. Which puts Hunzinger approximately 1000 years ahead of his time. He is definitely unmatched by other Victorian Furniture makers of the era. The rocker looks to be in good condition... which is a bit surprising as it's creation caused a rift in the time-space continuum!

This is a shot of a paper stamp. I am not sure when Hunzinger or his sons began using these. Both Hunzingers we own had the paper stamps.

Check this item out that is listed as a Hunzinger coat rack. No patent stamps or marks on it, but it is definitly Hunzingerish. In this particular case, I would be willing to bet that it is. Probably something he made as a special order to go with a pair of parlor chairs.

Note the hat racks, shoe racks, tilting mirror. Just what any fassionable Victorian gentleman needed to store his clothing upon.

Ocassionally there are things that take precedence over discussions on antique furniture... you see, I'm a cynical political junkie. Cynical from watching so many politicians use tactics that serve to divide our nation... our families... my family... into red & blue sides of the table (a Hunzinger preferably). There are usually a half-dozen of Hunzinger's flip-top gaming tables that sell on eBay each year. Nearly all of them have been re-surfaced at some point (cards put a lot of wear on that felt!). This particular one appears to have original finish along with a decrotive floral patern on the table top. Check out the feet and frame of the table. Very nice!

Christa notified me that I had been seriously slacking on my blogs lately. I enquired as to exactly how much blogging one had to do in order to be considered a slacker. She answered simply... "you have slipped to third place" What? Evidently at one time in the recent past, typing in the word Hunzinger in a Google search pulled my blog as the number one site... well, now I have slipped to third behind some construction company named Hunzinger and behind another furniture blogger: Rare Victorian. Although I can't begrudge either of them, especially John at the RareVic, for taking my spot, I will have to kick it up a notch to bring up my hit ranking. So here we go!

Check out this fine Hunzinger piece Christa sent me last night. Platform rocker with patented duplex spring system. The finish looks original. The carvings in the back are quite cool. Finally, it has a stamped pattent mark as opposed to a paper lable. I'm considering purchasing it, but If I don't I'll share the link to the sale page! :)

This sweet platform rocker was listed on eBay. Although the owner could not find the stamp, it is definitly a Hunzinger. The stamp was most likely on the under-side of the platform - this is where it is located on both rockers Christa and I own.

Not a Hunzinger

This Merklen chair is amazing. I got the picture from The Rare Victorian. Chairs like this one are frequently attributed to Hunzinger, but if you look over all the furniture pics on my site, you will start to see that the spindles on this piece are nothing like the rest of George Hunzinger's works. If this style is more to your liking than Hunzinger, I highly recomend checking out the Rare Victorian. You will see a wide variety of furniture from the Victorian age. This fine piece went on eBay for $3,800.00!!! That is the highest I have seen a single Hunzinger Rocker sell for on eBay.

Wow... 40 days no posts on my site... Bad blogger! Bad!

Anyway. Have been busy with other stuff, so my other blogs got short-shifted as well. I wish I could find something good to blame it on, but I'll go ahead and say... Halo 3. :)
